Muslim Man Give Each Other Gold Jewelry?? – Oh Only in Hollywood!

The Marriage Contract: Its Basic Elements ‘[Islamic View]

All praise is due to Allah, the Creator of our world and the laws that govern it. And Peace and blessings of Allah be upon His slave and final Messenger Muhammad (saws), the one sent to all of mankind, the one sent to guide people out from the darkness of shirk (polytheism), into the light of Tawheed (montheism).  Know dear reader that Allah (swt) has created things in pairs.  Those pairs must get together in certain ways in order for reproduction to occur.  The way for reproduction to occur amongst humans – males and females, is through marriage, known in Arabic as nikaah. Islam urges Muslims to marry, and prohibits pre-marital relationships.

Allah Most High says in the Qur’an: “Marry the unmarried among you…”1 Also, Allah’s Messenger (saws) in the hadith found in Bukhari and Muslim, commanded young people to marry, and advised those of them who could not afford it to fast as a means of controlling their sexual desire.  From an Islamic perspective, marriage is not viewed merely as a means of satisfying natural desires and passions.  Its goals are much deeper than just obtaining legal sex.  Allah (swt) points out one of the main objectives behind marriage by saying: “And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves that you might live with tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your hearts (hearts)…”2

Therefore, the phenomenon of bachelorship or celibacy are UN-Islamic practices that result in devastation, effecting the Muslim community, and posing a threat to the Islamic world.  What devastation? What threat on the Islamic world? The answers to these questions are found in the non-Muslim communities.  Every day we hear and observe with our very eyes the perverted and sinful ways of the Kuffar (disbelievers).  These ways which they find acceptable in their societies have ultimately led to many types of diseases such as A.I.D.S, syphilis and the like, as a result of their choice to follow the unnatural way of abstaining from marriage.

The marriage contract is the formal bond that turns two individuals from strangers to husband and wife.  It is the most important contract that most people execute throughout their lives. Since the marriage contract has such great significance, the deen of Islam imposes a number of guidelines that it must fulfill. Many Muslims who are engaged in pre-marital relationships hold back from having the contract executed due to their ignorance about its elements.  So they continue to live a sinful lifestyle due to cultural influences which lead them thinking the process is too demanding.  Before delving into the basic elements of marriage, it worth mentioning here that marriage is a serious matter and should be dealt with seriously.  It is not allowed for a man to marry and then claim he did not really mean it, or that he was joking. The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: “There are three matters in which it is not permissible to joke: marriage, divorce, and emancipation (of slaves).”3

The Islamic marriage contract has conditions, requirements, pillars and optional elements.  A contract must fulfill the following conditions and pillars in order to be valid.

Eligibility of Bride and Groom

The first of these conditions is that both the bride and groom must fulfill certain requirements.  The groom must be a chaste Muslim having attained the age of puberty. He must not be related to the bride by any of the permanently prohibiting blood, milk, or marital relationships such as his sisters, paternal and maternal aunts, daughters, grand daughters and others.  He must not be prohibited from marrying the bride for any of the temporary reasons stipulated in the Qur’an and Sunnah.  So if a man has four wives, all other women become temporarily prohibited from him.  Another example of a temporary reason is that as long as a man is married to a particular woman, all of her sisters become temporarily prohibited for him; that is he may not marry any of them unless he divorces their sister.  Others include: women married to other men, simultaneously marrying aunts and their nieces, adulteresses and prostitutes that have not sincerely repented, including others in which the Islamic shari ‘a may have listed.  The requirements a bride must fulfill is that she must be a  chaste Muslim, Christian or Jew.  She must not be married to another man, and must not be related to the groom by any of the permanently prohibiting blood, milk, or marital relationships in addition to not being prohibited from marrying the groom for any of the temporary reasons as stated above.

Bride’s Permission

The next required element of the marriage contract is the bride’s permission.  Without her permission, the contract is either null and void, or may be invalidated by the Islamic authorities at the bride’s request.  The minimum required permission may be done by either voicing her approval or through a passive expression such remaining silent when asked about a potential husband and simply nodding her head, or making any other motion to indicate that she does not object to the marriage. The Prophet (saws) said: “A deflowered unmarried woman (i.e. widow or divorcee) may not be married without her instructions; and a virgin may not be married without her permission, and her silence indicates her consent.”4

The Woman’s Wali

The next requirement of for a valid contract is the approval of the woman’s guardian known as the wali. The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: “A marriage (contract) is not valid without a wali.”5 Normally, a woman’s wali is her father.  If, for any reason, her father is unable to be her wali, her wali would then be her next closest blood relation: the grandfather, uncle, brother, son and so on. It is not permissible for a woman to take another woman as her wali.  The Prophet (saws) said: “A woman may not give another woman in marriage, nor may a woman give herself (independently) in marriage.”6 If the bride does not have a Muslim blood-relative as a wali, the Islamic authority, represented by the ruler or judge, would appoint a wali for her.  In non-Muslim communities the local imam is the one to be appointed as the wali of a woman who has no wali.  The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: “A marriage (contract) is not valid without a wali.  And the authority is the wali of the one who does not have awali.”7 The presence of the wali or a representative he has appointed is an integral element of the contract or else the contract is deemed invalid.  The Prophet (saws) said: “Whichever woman marries without her wali‘s permission, her marriage is void, her marriage is void, her marriage is void.  If he (i.e. the husband) performs intercourse with her, the mahr (dowry) becomes her right because he had access to her private parts.  And if they dispute, the ruler would then be the wali of the one who does not have a wali.”8

The witnesses

Another condition for the validity of a marriage contract is the presence of at least two trustworthy Muslim male witnesses. The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: “A marriage is not valid without a wali and two trustworthy witnesses.”9

The Mahr (Dowry)

The next element of the marriage contract is a mandatory marriage gift given by the husband to his wife.  In Arabic, this gift is called mahr or sadaaq.  Allah Most High said: “And give the women their dowry as a free gift.”10 He also made a commandment regarding by saying: “And give them their compensation as an obligation.”11 The mahr is the sole right of the wife and no one may take any of it without her permission – not even her parents.  The dowry can be in the form of money, jewelry, clothing, or other material things.  It can also be a non-material gift.  The Islamic sharia has not specified any amount, but it should be in accordance with the husband’s financial ability and with what is reasonable for the bride in her social status.  It is normally determined by agreement between the husband and the bride or her wali.  A woman came to the Prophet (saws) and offered herself to him.  He declined, so a man who was present with him said: “O Messenger of Allah! Marry her to me.”  The Prophet asked him: “Do you have anything to give her?”  He said: “No!”  The Prophet (saws) said: “Give her at least an iron ring.” But he still could not afford it. The Prophet (saws) then asked him: “Do you memorise any portion of the Qur’an?” He replied: “I have memorised such and such chapters.”  The Prophet (saws) then said: “…I marry her to you for the portion of the Qur’an that you have memorised.”  This means that he is expected to teach her some of what he has memorised, and treat her kindly based on this memorisation.  All of that would be much more beneficial to the bride than lots of material gift. Know that the best of  dowry is that which is light and easiest upon the husband.  This is actually a sign of blessing for the bride as the Messenger of Allah (saws) said: “Verily, a sign of blessing for a woman is that her engagement, dowry, and giving birth, are all made easy.”12 Umar ibn al-Khataab (r.a) once gave a sermon in which he said: “Do not be excessive in regard to the women’s dowries.”  It is recommended to give the bride her dowry immediately after executing the marriage contract.  Yet, it is a very common practice to divide themahr into two portions, an advanced and postponed portion.  Postponement of the mahr is, in general, an innovated inconvenience that departs from the normal practice found in the Sunnah.  It defeats the very purpose, which is to be a gift prior to having any intimacy with the bride.

Conditions

At the time of carrying out the marriage contract, the two parties my wish to set conditions whose violation would invalidate the contract.  This is acceptable as long as the conditions do not violate any Islamic principles.  Prophet Muhammad (saws) said: “Every condition not according to the book of Allah is void, even if it be a hundred conditions.”13 An example of a condition may be that a woman stipulates that she remain in a particular homeland during their marriage. The conditions are normally set by the wife’s side, because the husband can terminate the marriage by uttering the divorce.

Carrying out the Contract

It is recommended for the person conducting the marriage ceremony to start with Khutbat-ul Haajah that was reported by Ibn Masoud and Jabir in at-Tabaraani andBukhari in At-Taareekh.  The main and actual pillars of the contract are the offering and acceptance known as Ijaab and qabool. They signify the mutual agreement and acceptance between the two parties to join in this marriage bond.  The Ijaab and qabool must be stated in clear, well defined words, in one and the same sitting, and in the presence of the witnesses. The person conducting the ceremony may help the two parties say offering and accepting words.  Documenting the marriage contract is not a requirement for the contract’s validty.  However, it is important to document it for future reference and to preserve the rights of the husband and wife. Once the marriage contract is executed, all rights and responsibilities for the two parties become immediately due.

We ask Allah to bless us with beneficial knowledge and cure us from the ailment of ignorance and blind following, and Allah knows best!

Christmas Collective Haul Part 2

Meeting your boyfriends parnets for the first time

Step 1: The Talk

Perhaps one of the most essential things you and your boyfriend need to do before meeting his parents for the first time is have “The Talk“. In this conversation you want to get as much information as you can about his parents. Some questions you should ask your boyfriend should include:

*TIP* Make this a fun, light-hearted conversation. Make sure your boyfriend is relaxed, full, and not pre-occupied in something else. Consider sharing funny stories about your childhood too!*

Are both parents your biological parents? – There is nothing more embarrassing than saying to his father, “I see where Mike gets his good looks from!” only to find out later this man is actually Mike’s step or adopted father.

What is your relationship like with your mom and dad? – Does your boyfriend despise his father and sanctify his mother? Is he neutral about both? Does he love them both dearly?

Where do they live? – Know what state, town, and style of home they live in.  Do they live in a mobile home in a rural area, or maybe a condo in a suburb? Do they live in a grand estate in the Hamptons or an apartment in the city? This information is important also for making an excellent first impression and will be discussed more in Preparing to meet.

Have they always been in your life? – Knowing this can save you from an embarrassing situation such as saying, “Tell me about Mike as a baby” if his mother gave him up for adoption at birth and came back into his life later.

What was the atmosphere in your home like when you were living there? – Find out if it was tumultuous, happy, normal, abusive, fake (as in putting on a show), loving, strict, overly religious, free or extremely natural.

Listen carefully to what he has to say about this.

If he describes his childhood as tumultuous and abusive, you may need to brace yourself for awkward silences, mean or snide remarks, yelling, or even arguments. To try and offset unpleasant situations see Reactions.

If he describes his home as strict and fake you may consider things such as being very lady like, making only pleasant conversations and following all rules and customs that family may have.

If he describes his family as very or overly religious check the following long before you hit the door; swearing, drinking, smoking, excessive piercings, suggestive language, revealing or tight clothing and try to hide major tattoos. Many people who are religious can sometimes consider these things morally wrong, or disrespectful.  See Be Your Self

If he describes his family as loving and happy expect to be warmly welcomed, showered with compliments, hugged immediately, friendly or curious touching of your hair and clothing, and many offers drinks and snacks. Accept all graciously, moderately, and with a good natured smile. If touching puts you off see Reactions.

If your boyfriend describes his family as free thinkers, partiers, or extremely natural you should be excited and ready for anything! Prepare for the following; strong opinions about government, religion, major organizations and conspiracy theories.  Also, prepare for freeness in lifestyle. If he has described his family as natural, hippies, or partiers you may expect to see drinking, smoking, scratching of private parts, passing of gas, strange ideas in style of clothing, matching, and appropriateness( such as gardening in a dress and heels)and in some cases nakedness. Try to accept theories and beliefs with an open mind, if you immediately dismiss ideas as “silly” or “crazy” you may make an unpleasant situation. For the rest see Reactions.

Ok, now that you have had The Talk you need to move on to your Prepare to meet stage.

Step 2: Prepare to meet

*TIP* Play this fun and sexy game; ask him to help you pick a few outfits that he thinks would be appropriate for you to meet his parents in. Then let him pick something he would like to see you in right now and also what he would like to see under those carefully pulled together outfits. Wink wink!*

One of the main keys to meeting a boyfriend’s parents is “fitting in”. You want them to be able to look at you and think, “Yes, I would like my son to be with this girl.” You should never consider changing your personality; this will only show up later on as fake or as strange behavior. This is a fine line, but I suggest always going with the “fitting in” stance for first impressions, you only get to make one! Don’t think of this as acting fake but more as a toned down version of yourself. After all, he is taking you home to meet Mom and Dad.

When you prepare to meet his parents you need to look the part, at least on the first day. You want to dress and style yourself in a manner that suites the general tone of his family.

If he comes from a wealthy family that lives in a big 4 story house in a rich part of town, you may consider dressing in a modest skirt and blouse with nice shoes and a few well coordinated pieces of fine jewelry. In this case you might also consider hiding visible tattoos and toning down the amount of visible piercings.

Should your boyfriend come from a middle class family dress in a way that will portray a moderate classiness.  A cute skirt, shoes, and top often define this affinity, as does a pretty top, khaki pants and maybe a pair of designer shoes or handbag.  Middle class families are just that, right in the middle. They like and can afford some of the finer things in life but not all. A good rule of thumb for dressing to meet this family is to wear only one or two fine or designer items, any more than that will give off the impression that you are trying to hard or are too rich and may not be accepted well. NEVER brag about your designer items, if someone asks you, “What brand is that that purse?” smile graciously and give a sweet and simple answer such as, “Coach! Thank you for noticing! I just love these purses when I can get them, you have a really nice sweater on, and where did you get it?” This type of conversation can lead to very pleasant Small Talk which is essential for meeting your boyfriend’s parents the first time.

Does your boyfriend come from a small country town or not very wealthy family? Take this into consideration. Think of it like this, you never want to out shine your hostess. Pack plenty of jeans, cute tops, regular tee shirts, cute but not expensive jewelry and simple shoes. Be sure to pack one or two nice outfits but only wear them at the appropriate time, remember never outshine your hostess.

Got your suitcase packed? Great! Hey don’t run out the door quite yet, now you need to think about The Trip.

Step 3: The Trip

*TIP* Do things on your trip that you both enjoy such as listen to music or play silly games. Try not to touch subjects that make you argue or fight. Arriving in a bad mood is not on your agenda!*

My first and perhaps most important tip for traveling is watching what you eat. No, I’m not talking about calories and fat, I am talking about what type of food you should eat. Types of food to avoid are among the following. Food with too much garlic or onion, these are known to make your breath smell bad. Avoid food which you know causes you to have gas such as beans and broccoli. Stick to what you know, this is not really the time to experiment with new types of food. You want to be able to enjoy your first evening with your boyfriend’s parents, not hovered over their toilet praying! Shy away from spicy food and sea food as it could upset your stomach. In the last few hours of your trip avoid eating big meals such as massive burgers, big slices of pizza and so forth. Large quantities of food can make you sleepy or disoriented, when you want to be awake and energized.  I bet your thinking, “HEY! That’s pretty much everything! What am I supposed to eat???” I submit to you this, has it ever hurt you to have the chicken burger, salad, baked potato or fruit cup?

Here are a few tips for flying:

Wear comfortable clothing with easily removable shoes; avoid wearing excessive amounts of jewelry. Pack the pre selected outfit and accessories in your carryon bag.

Wear little to no makeup, it has a tendency to run or melt off on long plane rides. Carry just enough makeup in your carryon to “do your face”. About an hour before the plane lands excuse yourself and re apply make up in the airplane bathroom, this is also a good time to put on your jewelry. Remember the lighting tends to be either too harsh or too dim in the plane so always check your make up job before you go to claim your luggage.

Wear your hair in tightly French braided pigtails. When you take them out you will get an effortless wave to your hair that will be great for any location. If you can’t french braid your hair, go with the standard three strand braid or a bun. Avoid at all costs a ponytail. The hair band leaves an unsightly indentation in your hair and often can leave your ends looking frizzy or puffy.

When your plane lands, tell your boyfriend you need to visit the bathroom before you go pick up your luggage. Take that time to change clothes, dab on some perfume or body spray, re-apply deodorant, and freshen your breath and hair.

Avoid airport cocktails. I know it’s tempting, something to settle the nerves. If you feel you must partake keep a 2 drink maximum. That amount of alcohol will most likely relax you without disorienting you.

Tips for road trips:

Wear easy to travel in clothes such as jeans or shorts. Be sure to pack a sweater or light hooded sweatshirt so you can keep warm if you want to sleep and he needs to turn the air conditioner on full blast or roll down the windows.

Wear little to no makeup, it has a tendency to run or melt off on long rides. Carry just enough makeup in with you to “do your face”.  At the last rest stop, gas station or mall, have your boyfriend pull over and let you get out and change, this is also a good time to put on your jewelry . Take that time to dab on some perfume or body spray, re-apply deodorant, and freshen your breath and hair. This is also a good chance for stretching legs and getting in a last cigarette.

*TIP* If your palms tend to sweat when you get nervous making handshaking unpleasant put a thin layer of deodorant on them! This will help reduce moisture.*

Style your hair neatly. If your hair looks windblown use it to your advantage, calm it down a little with some water or mousse. Flip your head upside down a few times and gently frame it around your face. If for some reason you feel there is no hope for your hair, pull it neatly into a bun or braid. This looks more deliberate than just slicking it back into a ponytail.

Step 4: The Big Moment

They are finally insight! Let them take the lead in either giving you a hug or a handshake. Ask your beau if you should address them as Mr. and Mrs. or just by their first names. When in doubt greet them with Mr. and Mrs. Most likely they will say “Oh please call me Mary”

Soon after meeting give one of them a compliment. Such as “I can see where Mike gets that handsome jaw line from Don!” or “Mary, that is such an pretty pair of earrings, I just love them!”. Little things like that will help you gain favor in their eyes.

When you reach the home, dote on how beautiful it is. You love the bricks, or the shutters, what a tall building! How many floors? Look at how much land!

What if the house is not nice? What if you’re in a bad neighborhood? What if the apartment is tiny? Take note of one thing in the home and compliment it like crazy. “This collection is so cute!”, “I love all the pictures”, “Oh this couch is soooo comfortable!” People love to know their home is thought of by others as nice. This will score you major points.

Step 5: Small Talk

So, now you’re armed with basic knowledge of his family, you’ve have arrived and are looking effortlessly gorgeous. You should be ready right? Wrong. Now young grasshopper, you must learn the art of Small Talk.

For some of us small talk comes naturally, for others it’s an achieved art, and yet some of us are more versed in Large Talk. Here is the difference between small talk and large talk, the size of the issue being discussed. Small talk includes the weather, scenery, décor, art, TV shows and other light hearted subjects. Large talk consists of either extremely long winded answers or includes subjects such as religion, politics and money. At all costs, I implore you, stay away from large talk. Everyone knows, if you want someone to like you there are a handful of things you DO NOT talk about.  Here are some examples of things you should not talk about and also how to respond appropriately.

1. Religion- This can include your view on specific religions and your view on agnosticism or atheism.  This also includes conspiracy theories, such as Moon Landing Hoax, Big Brother, and Extra Terrestrial Life. Unless you are positive your views are directly in line with your host’s views leave these subjects alone.

Should your boyfriend’s parents go off on a rant about one of these subjects, good naturedly laugh and say, “Well everyone is entitled to their opinion, that’s why I love to live in this country. Did anyone in your family ever join the service?” (The answer is almost always yes, most of our grandparents got drafted) and most people will not say negative things about military service. Now you have diffused the situation and can head into calmer water.

2. Money- How much you make, where you get money from, spending habits, bill paying methods, and debt are all issues better left not talked about.

If good old Mom or Dad says, “So, how much do you make?” consider an answer like this. “About as much as most nurses” or “About the same as Mike” or “I love being a teacher, the pay is the least of my worries”. This gives somewhat of a vague answer but lets them know you are not going to give a specific answer.

3. Politics- Views on affirmative action, laws and legislation, abortion, politicians and Presidential scandals should not be discussed. Take the Golden Rule approach, and if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.

“I hate that old Senator so-n-so, he does no good!” Wow! What a loaded statement! An easy way to diffuse this is to just say, “Maybe, I don’t really follow politics that much. Have you ever been to Washington D.C.? I hear the cherry blossoms are just beautiful!” Even if you do follow politics chatting about different cities you’ve visited is a much more pleasant conversation.

4.  Your past- Do not talk about how many past boyfriends you have had, past failures, abusive relationships or anything that leaves bad memories. There are just some things that his parents just don’t need to know.

“So, you’re a pretty girl, I bet you are beating the boys off with a stick”. Don’t go there! This is usually a question asked by a mother or sister trying to feel you out for how many men you have dated and asses the likelihood of you breaking little Mike’s heart. Just smile and say “Hardly, I really enjoy Mike, he treats me so well. I could believe he brought me here to meet all of you, I was so impressed that he is really taking this relationship seriously!”

5. Lifestyle choices- Discussions about Bi-sexual, Gay, Lesbian, Transgendered and Cross Dresser lifestyles should never be mentioned by you. You never know what skeletons could be lurking in someone’s closet. Take the Golden Rule Approach here too.

Ask your boyfriend to kindly leave out the parts of the story where you got so drunk and made out with a girl. If these subjects become an issue….your kind of out of luck, just smile and nod and change the subject when you can.

Step 6: Small talk

*TIP* If you get caught in a particularly boring conversation or one that you don’t know much about here is a sure fire method for getting out of it. Just don’t use it too often or else people will catch on!  Lean you’re your head slightly to the right, look the speaker directly in the eyes, smile and nod adding in things like “Really?”, “Is that so?”, “Oh wow”, “Cool”. At the first chance you get change the subject to something like “I remember my dad used to do that” or “I read about that, I love to read, what is your favorite book?”.*

Think of some easy to talk about subjects that leave a lot of room for discussion. Some of the most common things are the weather, children, art, music, TV shows, gardening, fishing, books, technology, cars, cooking, and sports. Pick 3 of the above subjects and keep them in your ‘holster’ in case you need to change a subject quickly.

Remember, people love to talk about themselves so the easiest way to get a conversation going is to ask them a question, and slowly add in information about you! You might say “This is a really interesting painting, where did you get it?” you might get a response such as “Oh I don’t know, a garage sale”. Don’t let the conversation end there, continue on by saying “Oh I love garage sales; you never know what treasures you are going to find! Is that something you do often?”

If you get into a conversation that you don’t know much about, don’t pretend to know about that subject. That is a sure fire way to make yourself look silly. Instead say “Wow, that’s really interesting but I know next to nothing about cars! Mike is always trying to tell me about it but…I just don’t get it. You put the key in the slot right?!”  Ending with a joke will make you come off as funny rather than uninformed.

Step 7: Reactions

*TIP* Reactions are all about staying calm poised and graceful. This is something you can practice all the time in all areas of your life.

Your reactions say a lot about you. If you notice an awkward silence caused by a family fight try to gently coax out a different subject such as saying “Wow, I remember on our trip to Disney Land we would all get into arguments but once we got there we had a blast. Have you guys ever been to Disney Land?” This might seem corny but someone in the room will pick up on the fact that you would like to change the subject. If no one says anything or looks at you crazy let your proposed subject drop.  Ask if you can get a glass of water or excuse yourself to the bathroom. In the company of guests families tend to get over arguments faster. It will probably be all blown over by the time you get back.

If you meet a family who likes to hug you or touch your hair or clothing and that makes you feel weird, your best bet is to voice that to your boyfriend in private. Tell him that you enjoy the compliments; it’s just that all the touching makes you feel a little awkward. Ask him to talk to his parents for you, in the nicest way possible. Unless you are being inappropriately touched never yank away or viciously state “Don’t touch me!” This will embarrass your host and make everyone feel anxious around you. Instead try to sit away from the touch-er. If you can’t seem to get away try and sit between your boyfriend and the edge something.

If you happen to be a bi-racial couple, expect to get some head turns or some sideways looks. Not everyone can deal with this fact. If one of his family members makes a comment about your race, blatantly ignore it. If they continue on excuse yourself to another room. Do not expect your boyfriend to immediately jump up and defend your honor but rather to talk to that person in private in a grown up, dignified way. Do not expect an apology from that person, that way if you do get one it will be a pleasant surprise. Racial slurs should not be tolerated and can often be quailed by saying “Yes, that may be true about some individuals in my race but we also have some of the hardest working people I have ever seen.”  Or, “It seems rather unfair to judge a whole group of people based on the actions of a few.” Taking a negative and turning it into a positive many times can change a whole conversation.

The good, the bad and the strange. Every once and a while you will run into the unabashed father or brother. He might expel gas, scratch himself, or walk around in various states of undress. Try not to let it bother you. If this behavior is happening around you, it’s not likely it will ever change. If anyone expels gas, act like you hear or smell nothing at all. If it is right in the middle of them speaking to you just laugh and say, “Oh wow that was a big one!” and resume your conversation immediately. If this behavior becomes too much or too disgusting excuse yourself into a different room and see if your boyfriend will intercede for you. If nothing will sedate this unpleasant behavior suggest taking a walk, going to the mall, seeing the sights or any other family activity that will get you out of there!

Step 8: Respect

*TIP* Have your boyfriend give you a goodnight kiss and hug in front of your door before you enter your separate sleeping quarters for the night. It will bring back the memories of when you first started dating.*

Are his parents old fashioned and don’t want you to sleep in the same room? Don’t argue the point you have been seeing each other for 2 years now. Just respect their wishes. Does his mom not like your tongue ring? Take it out or put in a clear one. If smoking is offensive to them, you might wait till nightfall and sneak one, or just not smoke at all. Respect them, it is their home.  When people show respect for common courtesy they gain respect. It’s only for a few days anyway right?

Step 9: Be yourself, it’s bound to come out anyway!

*TIP* Remember, no one ever makes the perfect first impression. If something went wrong, brush it off and recover. Obviously your boyfriend sees something awesome about you, he did bring you home to meet Mom and Dad didn’t he? Keep in mind, the fact that he wanted to bring you to meet them is the big deal.

Do you feel like your dressed weird? Talking weird? Being too miss nice girl? Is this all just not you? Listen, you’re not changing you, you are for the first meeting presenting a toned down, version of you.  Tomorrow show his mom your tattoo on your arm, tell her why you got it and what it means to you.  Then maybe the next day add in a few more of your piercings, or ask if they mind if you step out back to have a cigarette. Show that offbeat humor that your known for. Slowly integrate your own personality, after all you want them to like you, not Stepford-You.

History of Tribal Jewelry

Oldest Jewelry Discovered

The oldest jewelry known to date was discovered in Blombos Cave located on the coast of South Africa. The cave was the site of beads made from the shells of a sea snail and punctured with small holes so they could be strung on a necklace. These shell beads have been dated to around 75,000 years, and tribal jewelry has played an important role in African culture ever since.

Tribal Jewelry Materials

Tribal Jewelry has traditionally been constructed from natural materials such as ivory, resin, horn, bone, seeds, wood, shells, animal teeth and claws, metal, hair, and stone. These materials have been used to create chokers, necklaces, rings, earrings, anklets, bangles, bracelets, and belts, which have been used in a variety of ways.

Early Uses of Jewelry

Jewelry was used for personal adornment and as the medium of exchange in the earliest trading that took place between Africa and Asia. Cowrie shells were used as a form of money, and necklaces and belts made of cowrie shells were considered to be extremely valuable. The shape of the cowrie shell caused it to be associated with woman’s spirituality and fertility, and cowrie belts and necklaces were used in religious ceremonies. The women in some tribes wore ankle bracelets made of seed beads while performing ritual dances to celebrate a young woman’s coming-of-age, and tribes in South Africa wore bracelets made of elephant hair to honor their gods and the strength of the elephant. Some elephant hair bracelets were designed with four knots, believed to represent the four elements of air, earth, fire, and water.

Egypt’s Contributions

The Egyptians were the first to create beads using a wide variety of materials. They didn’t limit their use to jewelry, and their beaded art adorned belts, sandals, and clothing. Egyptian beads and jewelry eventually traveled along early trade routes and their influence spread throughout the rest of Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Other Tribal Jewelry Uses

Tribal jewelry has been an integral part of African culture, used in dancing, religious rituals, as a sign of wealth and status, as a form of money, as burial offerings, and for personal adornment. The jewelry used for ornamentation in West Africa was traditionally used to tell a story. These articles were created according to sacred tradition, with each bracelet, pendant, knot or bead having a spiritual significance. Tribal jewelry was used for protection and strength, to display tribal identity, and to represent the wearer’s history and status. Royalty in ancient Egypt wore ostrich shell necklaces as a symbol of their status, while a groom in Ghana gave his bride a beaded belt on their wedding day, which she continued to wear afterward to denote her married status. Superstition also played a role in the use of tribal jewelry, with some tribes believing that certain beads and other materials had magical powers. An amulet was worn by the mother of twins in West Africa to celebrate her twins’ power and magic, and tribes in Mali and Ivory Coast believed that copper had strong, protective powers.

African Tribal Jewelry Today

African tribal jewelry has a rich tradition that continues to this day. Bracelets, belts, and anklets are still worn by dancers to accentuate each body movement. The manila, a bracelet made of hammered copper and commonly used in the 11th century, is still worn in Africa today. All around the world African tribal jewelry is used to enhance personal beauty and express cultural diversity while displaying the artistry of African craftsmen.

Softball ***the Sport of the Century***

There are many ways to get on base. Types of hits include full swing, bunt, drag bunt, and slap hits. A batter can get on base through a walk, or when hit by a pitch, but these situations are not hits. Runners can only leave their bases after the pitcher releases the ball.

Both teams switch between offense and defense after the defensive team makes three outs. Outs can be made in many ways. A defensive player (a fielder) can catch a hit ball before it hits the ground, making an out. A fielder can also hold the ball while touching a base, when an offensive player (here, a base runner) is forced to advance, before the runner reaches that base. If the runner is not forced to advance, the runner must be tagged with the ball to be called out. A pitcher “strikes” out the batter, resulting in an out.

A strikeout is when the pitcher throws three strikes to the batter. A strike is given when there is a good pitch, which the batter does not hit, when the batter swings at the ball and misses it or when the batter fouls off the ball (although a foul ball cannot be strike three unless it is bunted). The batter is also given four balls. A ball is a bad pitch. If the batter receives four balls, the batter is awarded first base. This is known as a walk. Good and bad pitches are determined by the strikezone. The strike zone is a rectangular area that extends for the width of homeplate and the length runs from the knees of the batter to just below the shoulders.

Softball has a set number of innings, usually seven or nine. An inning is one series of both teams playing offense and defense. At the end of the set number of innings the team with the highest score wins.

Softball is a direct descendant of baseball, which is sometimes referred to as hardball to distinguish it from softball, but differs from it in several ways (see Comparison of baseball and softball). This article assumes no knowledge of baseball.

The International Softball Federation holds world championships, held every four years, in several categories. The ISF is the international governing body. The Amateur Softball Association is the National Governing Body of Softball for the United States pursuant to the 1976 Amateur Sports Act. Due to the popularity of the sport, there are a multitude of governing bodies such as the United States Specialty Sports Association and the National Softball Association.

Fast Pitch softball is a very defensive, pitcher-oriented game. The pitcher delivers the ball at maximum speed with little to no arc. The pitch is very similar to that of one thrown by a baseball pitcher, but the two differ primarily in their throwing styles and release points: most baseball pitchers release the ball from a point higher than the catcher’s glove (overhand), whereas fast pitch softball pitchers release at a point that is lower than or equal to the height of the catcher’s glove (underhand). Speeds of 70+ mph (110+ km/h) are common at the women’s professional level. Due to the increased difficulty in hitting the larger, less dense ball, fast pitch softball games are typically played on much smaller fields than their slow pitch counterparts (typically 200 feet [61 metres] from home plate to the center field fence).

Modified Pitch softball strikes a balance between fast and slow pitch. The speed of the pitches are limited by not allowing the pitcher to raise their arms above their shoulders.

Slow Pitch softball gives batters more dominance by making it easier for them to hit the ball. The ball type in women’s and youth competition is usually smaller and more dense than that of the fast pitch variety, making for a harder hit ball to the defense. This type of ball is often referred to as a “Green Dot”, due to the green dot on the ball that marks its size range. Men’s slow pitch ball type is very similar to that of the fast pitch ball type. Men’s slow pitch softballs are often referred to as “Blue Dot”, due to the blue dot on the ball that marks its size range. Typically, slow pitch softball fields are much larger (300 feet [90 metres] from home plate to center field) due to the slow pitch batter’s increased advantage of range and power over their fast pitch counterparts. The increased hitting advantage to the batter combined with new technology in softball bat manufacturing has forced many softball leagues to impose rules on the number of over-the-fence home runs that may be counted during a game.

Slow Pitch Chicago Style softball is popularized by the use of a large 16 inch leather bound ‘Kapok’ core ball that is caught and thrown with bare hands. No mitt is needed or required or allowed in some leagues. The ball is softened by each hitter’s strike and can carry long distances by the use of heavier bats. A 36 ounce bat is the limit in many regulation leagues. The most popular ball for the game is called a Clincher made by DeBeer Company and manufactured in Haiti. It weighs 9 ounces, 3 ounces more than a 12 inch ball which is also used in slowpitch softball, but the difference is a Clincher gets softer as the game progresses while a tightly wound 12 inch ball remains extremely hard and impossible to field with bare hands. This sport is popular in the cities of Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

The playing field is divided into fair territory and foul territory. Fair territory is further divided into the infield, the outfield, and the territory beyond the outfield fence.

The field is defined by foul lines that meet at a right angle at home plate. The minimum length of the baselines varies classification of play (see below for official measurements). A fence running between the baselines defines the limits of the field; this fence is equidistant from home plate at all points.

Behind home plate is a backstop. It must be between 25 and 30 feet (7.62 and 9.14 meters) behind home plate.

Home Plate is a five-sided figure, a combination of a rectangle and triangle, 17 in (43 cm) wide. The sides are 8.5 in (22 cm) long. The triangle fits into the right angle formed by the baselines.

Home plate is one corner of a diamond with bases at each corner. The bases other than home plate are 15 in (38 cm) square, of canvas or a similar material, and not more than 5 in (13 cm) thick. The bases are usually securely fastened to the ground. The bases are numbered counter clockwise as first base, second base, and third base. Often, but not always, outside first base (that is, in foul territory) and adjacent and connected to it there is a contrast-colored “double base” or “safety base”. It is intended to prevent collisions between the first baseman and the runner. The runner runs for the foul portion of the double base after hitting the ball while the fielding team tries to throw the ball to the regular first base before the runner reaches the safety base. However, not all softball diamonds have these safety bases and they are much more common in women’s softball than in men’s. The double base is required in ISF championships.

The infield consists of the diamond and the adjacent space in which the infielders (see below) normally play. The outfield is the remaining space between the baselines and between the outfield fence and the infield. The infield is usually “skinned” (dirt), while the outfield has grass in regulation competitions.

Near the centre of the diamond is the pitching plate. In fast pitch, a skinned circle 8 feet (2.44 meters) in diameter known as the pitching circle is around the pitching plate.

A field is officially supposed to have a warning track between 15 and 12 feet (5 and 4 meters) from the outfield fence. However, if the game is being played on a field larger than required, no warning track is required before the temporary outfield fencing.

Located in foul territory outside both baselines are two Coach’s Boxes. Each box is behind a line 15 feet (5 meters) long located 12 feet (3 meters) from each baseline.

Equipment required in softball includes a ball, a bat, gloves, uniforms and protective gear, including helmets for the offensive team and a helmet and chest protector for the defensive catcher.

Despite the sport’s name, the ball itself is not soft. The size of the ball varies according to the classification of play; the permitted circumferences in international play are 12 in (30 cm) and 11 in (28 cm). The ball is most often covered in white leather in two pieces roughly the shape of a figure 8 and sewn together with red thread, although other coverings are permitted. The core of the ball may be made of long fibre kapok, or a mixture of cork and rubber, or a polyurethane mixture, or another approved material. In 2002, high-visibility yellow “optic” softballs were introduced. Yellow is the color of official NCAA and NAIA softballs. Yellow softballs are fast becoming the standard for all levels of play.White balls are also allowed use, but rarely will you use them in games.

In Chicago, where softball was invented, it remains traditional to play with a ball 16 inches in circumference. This larger ball is generally softer (sometimes called a mush ball). When using a 16-inch ball, the fielders do not wear gloves or mitts.

All defensive players wear fielding gloves, made of leather or similar material. Gloves have webbing between the thumb and forefinger. The first baseman and the catcher may wear mitts; mitts are distinguished from gloves in that they have extra padding, and no fingers. Except for the pitcher, whose glove cannot be white or gray (this confuses the batter), gloves and mitts can be any color. Gloves used in softball are generally larger than the ones used in baseball.

In 16 inch softball, gloves are generally not worn. It will be determined by league whether gloves are permissible or not.

Each team wears distinctive uniforms. The uniform includes a cap, a shirt, an undershirt, tight sliding undershorts, and shorts or pants; these are the components for which standards are set. Sliding kneepads are also optional.

Caps must be alike and are mandatory for male players. Caps, visors, and headbands are optional for female players, and must be the same color if more than one is worn. A fielder who chooses to wear a helmet (see below) is not required to wear a cap.

Including for softball players, most players use “sliding shorts” otherwise known as compression short for other sports like soccer, football etc. These shorts help, and protect the upper thigh when sliding towards second, third, or home plate.

At the back of the uniform an Arabic number from 1-99 must be visible. Numbers like 02 and 2 are considered identical. Players’ names are optional.

Jewelry, except for medic-alert-style bracelets and necklaces, cannot be worn during a game.

All players are required to wear shoes. They may have cleats or spikes. The spikes must extend less than 3/4 inch (19 millimeters) away from the sole. Rounded metal spikes are illegal, as are ones made from hard plastic or other synthetic materials. Detachable metal cleats are forbidden at any level of play.

Many recreational leagues prohibit the use of metal cleats or spikes in order to reduce the possible severity of injuries when a runner slides feet-first into a fielder. At all youth (under 15) levels, in co-ed (the official terminology for mixed teams) slow pitch, and in modified pitch, metal spikes are not allowed.

All batters are required to wear batting helmets. Batting helmets must have two ear flaps, one on each side, and a protective cage. Cages are required at most age levels except the youngest level but are mandatory at higher levels of youth softball. The cage prevents balls from hitting the batter’s face. Helmets and cages that are damaged or altered are forbidden.

In fast pitch, the catcher must wear a protective helmet with a facemask and throat protector. A female catcher must wear a body protector at any level of play. At the youth level, shin guards are required. Shin guards also protect the kneecap. Also, some third base players or players in other positions may be required to wear a face mask. This is to prevent damage to the face.[citation needed]

In slow pitch, the catcher must wear a helmet and mask at youth levels. At adult levels, there is no formal requirement for the catcher to wear a mask, although the official rules recommend it.

Protective gear of any kind is generally not worn in 16 inch softball.

A softball game can last anywhere from 3 to 9 innings, depending on the league, rules, and type of softball; however 7 innings is the most common. In each inning, each team bats until three batters have been put out (see below). The teams take turns batting. Officially, which team bats first is decided by a coin toss,[1] although a league may decide otherwise at its discretion. The most common rule is that the home team bats second. Batting second is advantageous.

In the event of a tie, extra innings are usually played until the tie is broken except in certain tournaments and championships. If the home team is leading and the road team has just finished its half of the seventh inning, the game ends because it is not necessary for the home team to bat again.

In all forms of softball, the defensive team is the fielding team; the offensive team is at bat or batting and is trying to score runs.

The Play begins with the umpire saying “Play Ball”. After the batter is ready and all fielders (except the catcher) are in fair territory, the pitcher stands at the pitching plate and attempts to throw the ball past the batter to the catcher behind home plate. The throw, or pitch, must be made with an underarm often called “windmill” motion: the ball must be released below the hip when the hand is no farther from the hip than the elbow.

a windmill motion is done by extending your throwing hand around your body backwards and releasing the ball at about hip level at maximum speeds. 12u pitchers usually throw in the 30′s, 14u is about in the 40′s or low 50′s, 16u is when the speeds may top out at 70 mph.

The pitcher tries to throw the ball so that it passes through the strike zone. However, in advance play a highly-skilled pitcher may deliberately pitch a ball outside the strike zone if she believes the batter is likely to swing. In other instances, such as when an extremely powerful hitter comes up to bat and they are followed by a weaker hitter, a pitcher may deliberately walk the first batter based on the calculation that the next batter will be an easy out. The strike zone is slightly different in different forms of softball. A pitch that passes through that zone is a strike. A pitch that the batter swings at is also a strike, as is any hit ball that lands in foul territory (unless it is fast pitch and two strikes have already been called).

A pitch which is not a strike and which the batter does not swing at is a ball. The number of balls and strikes is called the count. The number of balls is always given first, as 2 and 1, 2 and 2, and so on. A count of 3 and 2 is a full count, since the next ball or strike will end the batter’s turn at the plate, unless the ball goes foul.

If the ball lands foul, it is a dead ball and no plays may be made until the pitcher receives the ball again, and the home plate umpire says, “Play ball.”

Various illegal acts done by the pitcher, such as leaping or crow-hopping result in a ball being awarded to the batter, and any runners on base advancing to the next base.

In 16-inch softball, the pitch is lobbed. It must be thrown higher than the batter’s head and pass through the strike zone. Umpires often will make calls based on where the ball lands behind the plate. A pitch in “the well” is considered a perfect pitch.

The offensive team sends one batter at a time to home plate to use the bat to try to hit the pitch forward into fair territory. The order the players bat in, known as the batting order, must stay the same throughout the game. Substitutes and replacements must bat in the same position as the player they are replacing. In co-ed, male and female batters must alternate.

The batter stands facing the pitcher inside a batter’s box (there is one on each side of the plate). The bat is held with both hands, over the shoulder away from the pitcher. The ball is usually hit with a full swinging motion in which the bat may move through more than 360 degrees. The batter usually steps forward with the front foot and swings the bat.

Once the ball is hit into fair territory the runner must try to advance to first base or beyond. While running to first base, the batter is a batter-runner. When she safely reached first (see below) she becomes a base-runner or runner.

If four balls are called, then it is a walk. The batter gets to walk to first and if there is a runner on first the runner gets to advance to second.

A batted ball hit high in the air is a fly ball. A fly ball hit upward at an angle greater than 45 degrees is a pop fly. A batted ball driven in the air through the infield at a height at which an infielder could play it if in the right position is a line drive. A batted ball which hits the ground within the diamond is a ground ball. If a batted ball hits a player or a base it is considered to have hit the ground.

The batter is out if: three strikes are called (a strikeout); a ball hit by the batter is caught before touching the ground (a flyout); the batter is touched by the ball or by a glove holding the ball while the batter is away from a base (tagged); a fielder holding the ball touches a base which is the only base towards which the batter may run before the batter arrives there (a force out or force play); or in certain special circumstances. Unlike in baseball, where the batter is allowed unlimited foul balls, in many slow pitch softball leagues only one foul ball is allowed and additional foul balls are considered a strike.

The most common type of force play is made at first base. A batter that drives a ball forward into fair territory must run to first base. If the ball is thrown to first base (that is, to a fielder standing on first base and is holding the ball) before the batter can reach it, the batter is out. A double play is when two runners are put out during a single continuous action; a triple play is when three runners are put out.

In co-ed slow pitch, teams must alternate male and female batters. If a team is, for whatever reason, unable to do this, an out is recorded wherever two players of the same gender bat back-to-back. The missing player is recorded as being “put out.”

If the player hits the ball and advances to a base without a fielding error or an out being recorded, then that is called a base hit. The bases must be reached in order counterclockwise, starting with first base. After hitting the ball the batter may advance as many bases as possible. An advance to first base on the one hit is a single, to second base is a double, to third base is a triple, and to home plate is a home run. Home runs are usually scored by hitting the ball over the outfield fence, but may be scored on a hit which does not go over the fence. A home run includes any ball that bounces off a fielder and goes over the fence in fair-territory or that hits the foul pole. If a batted ball bounces off a fielder and goes over the fence in foul territory, hits the fence, a fielder, and then goes over, or if it goes over the fence at a location that is closer than the official distance, the batter is awarded a double instead.

If a runner becomes entitled to the base where another runner is standing, the latter runner must advance to the next base. For example, if a player hits the ball and there is a runner on first, the runner on first must try to advance to second because the batter-runner is entitled to first base. If the batter reaches first base without being put out, then that player can then be forced to run towards second base the next time a ball is driven into fair territory. That is because the player must vacate first base to allow the next batter to reach it, and consequently can only go to second base, where a force out may be recorded.

Runners may advance at risk to be put out: on a hit by another player; after a fly ball has been caught, provided the player was touching a base at the time the ball was caught or after; or automatically, when a pitch is delivered illegally; or on an error by a fielder.

Runners advance without liability to be put out: when a walk advances another player to the runner’s current base; or automatically in certain special circumstances described below.

If there is a wild throw in which the ball goes out of the designated play area, each runner is awarded the base they were going to, plus one extra base.

In fast pitch, runners may try to get a stolen base by running to the next base on the pitch and reaching it before being tagged with the ball. Until recently, stealing was forbidden in slow pitch because a runner would get a huge head start while the slow pitch is making its way to the batter. As a result of rule changes initiated by the Independent Softball Association which later made its way to the Amateur Softball Association and the International Softball Federation in the 21st century, most levels of slow pitch permit stealing bases, provided the runner starts when the ball either touches the ground or crosses the plate. This rule encourages pitchers to be more responsible with the pitch and catchers to play defense, as balls which miss the catcher are now grounds to have stolen bases.

No matter what level of play, all baserunners must keep one foot on a base until the pitcher throws the ball.

In fast pitch, if the catcher drops strike three (a passed ball) with less than two outs, the batter can attempt to run to first base if first base is unoccupied. The catcher must then attempt to throw the ball to first base ahead of the runner. If he or she cannot, the runner is safe. With two outs, the batter can attempt to run to first whether or not it is already occupied.

Depending on the league in slow pitch only a foul ball with two strikes on the batter means the batter is out. In some leagues they allow 1 foul ball even when the batter has 2 strikes.

Stealing in 16-inch softball is severely restricted, as a runner may only steal the base in front of them if it is open, and if they are thrown at, à la pickoff move or snap throw. This results in many inexperienced players being thrown or doubled off when they attempt to advance on a wild pickoff at another baserunner.

A run is scored when a player has touched all four bases in order, proceeding counterclockwise around them. They need not be touched on the same play; a batter may remain safely on a base while play proceeds and attempt to advance on a later play.

A run is not scored if the last out occurs during the same play that the runner crosses home plate. For instance, if a runner is on third base prior to a hit, and they cross home plate before or after an out is made, either on the batter or another runner, the run is not counted.

The team with the most runs after seven innings wins the game. The last (bottom) half of the seventh inning or any remaining part of the seventh inning is not played if the team batting second is leading.

If the game is tied, play usually continues until a decision is reached, by using the international tie-breaker rule. Starting in the top of the eighth inning, the batting team starts with a base-runner on second base, which is the player who made the third out in the previous inning.

In games where one team leads by a large margin, the mercy rule may come into play in order to avoid embarrassing weaker teams. In fast pitch and modified pitch, a margin of 20 runs after three innings, 15 after four, or 10 after five is sufficient for a win to be declared for the leading team. In slow pitch, the margin is 20 runs after four innings or 15 after five innings. In the NCAA, the required margin after 5 innings is 8 runs. The mercy rule takes effect at the end of an inning. Thus, if the team batting first is ahead by enough runs for the rule to come into effect, the team batting second is given their half of the inning to try and narrow the margin.

A game may be lost due to a forfeit. A score of 7-0 for the team not at fault is recorded. A forfeit may be called due to any of these circumstances: if a team does not show up to play; if one side refuses to continue play; if a team fails to resume play after a suspension of play ends; if a team uses tactics intended to unfairly delay or hasten the game; if a player removed from the game does not leave within one minute of being instructed to do so; if a player that cannot play enters the game and one pitch has been thrown; if a team does not have, for whatever reason, enough players to continue; or if after warning by the umpire, a player continues to intentionally break the rules of the game. This last rule is rarely enforced as players who break rules after being warned are usually removed.

The plate umpire may suspend play because of darkness or anything that puts players or spectators in danger. If five innings have been played, the game is recorded as it stands. This includes ties. If fewer than four innings have been played, the game is not considered a regulation game.

Games that are not regulation or are regulation ties are resumed from the point of suspension. If it is a championship game, it is replayed from the beginning. Team rosters may be changed.

One custom in the United States is to high-five the other teams players after the game.

One reason for the popularity of softball is the ease of modification of the rules, thereby allowing the game to be adapted to a variety of skill levels. For example, in some slow pitch softball leagues a batter starts at bat with a count of one ball one strike. In some leagues, the number of home runs that can be hit by a team are limited. In other leagues, stealing of bases is prohibited.

Some leagues require teams to use limited flight softballs. These softballs, when hit, will not go as far as regular softballs. Other leagues limit the number of runs which can be scored in an inning. Five is a common limit.

By allowing these and other modifications, softball can be enjoyed by children, teenagers, and adults. Senior leagues with players over the age of 60 are not uncommon.

An example of a rule modification is the “offensive pitcher” (or “self pitch”) often found in informal games where the emphasis is on the social rather than the competitive aspects of the game. The pitcher aids the batter by attempting to give the easiest pitch to hit. There are no walks, and a batter is normally given a fixed number of pitches to attempt to hit (usually 3 or 4). The batter is considered to strike out if she fails to hit the ball into fair territory after the given number of pitches. The pitcher does not act as a fielder, and a rule is often made that if a batted ball touches the pitcher, the batter is out.

In some leagues the number of pitches to walk or strikeout can be reduced. For instance, one strike is an out, and two balls is a walk. This is common in leagues where doubleheaders are played, or in late season leagues when reduced daylight is an issue. It results in shorter games, as players are more apt to swing, even at marginal pitches, rather than risk striking out on one pitch.

Many leagues also include a second first base immediately adjacent to the main one. This is usually orange and the batter running through first base is supposed to run straight through it. This minimizes the chances of a collision. By the same token some leagues have an alternate home plate and rule that plays at home are always force plays. In these cases there is typically a white line drawn approximately 1/3 of the way down the baseline that is considered a point of no return. This is designed to reduce the “Pickle” which can put a great strain on the ankles and knees of older baserunners.

Despite the fact that it was originally intended to be played indoors, softball is usually played outdoors. The indoor form is sometimes called Arena Softball. It is most similar to slow pitch. There are no “official” rules for the indoor form, but some general conventions are given below.

Only the wall behind the batter is considered foul territory. The other walls are considered fair. If a ball hits a wall and is caught before it lands, the batter flies out. Usually, there is a small area on one of the walls that results in a home run being awarded if the batted ball hits it.

Pitching is generally of the slow form. The count starts at 1 ball, 1 strike.

The placement of the fielders is different. The pitcher also acts as the second baseman. There is no catcher.

There is no limit to the number of batters a team may have available.

Organic Lawn Care Resources

Upon going to Home Depot to pick up some bags for our gardening video blog, I discovered that this store didn’t carry a single organic lawn fertilizer.  Curiosity piqued, I searched online for organic fertilizer on the Home Depot website.  A couple random garden fertilizers came up but were only two that were labeled organic.  Ellen suspects, since all the Home Depots in Ontario carry organic fertilizers, that the fertilizer and pesticide industry might be putting pressure on Home Depots in the US.  She might be onto something because the web results for Lowe’s were surprisingly similar.  Anyway if you would like greater variety in your organic lawn care needs (or if you even wanted to hire someone) I’ve compiled a list of stores and products which a wider range of selections than the promising choice between Scott’s Organics or Converted Organics.  And hey, while you’re at it why not tell them that LEAH sent you?
